Friday Home Group

This group meets roughly monthly to engage in the study and discussion of the Bible (and occasionally other religious literature).  We spent much of 2008-9 engaged in a study of the Book of Acts, which describes the growth of the early Christian church in the period immediately after Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.  Although this story is almost certainly the work of the gospel writer Luke, it is seen through the “eyes” of those who were with the main leaders of the early church as it developed: particularly Peter and Paul.  The book was interesting for what we found about how certain events came to be of significance and also from how it is put together – how sometimes long and significant periods of time are telescoped into quite short, and apparently insignificant, passages of narrative, while much longer descriptions are given of the journeys that Paul, in particular, undertook. We took a long time over this (well over a year, on and off, though nothing like as long as the original “journey” took!) but all found it a worthwhile study of a book that many were quite unfamiliar with.

We have now embarked on something completely different: a series of studies called “Inspired by the Bible” in which individual members of the group will look at a particular work – which might be a book (or series of books), a piece of music, or a painting – that has been inspired by something in the Bible.  The opening session, which looked at CS Lewis’ “Narnia” books, has set a standard that all succeeding leaders will find they have to work hard to emulate.

Next meeting: Please speak to Richard Bunce for date, topic & venue information.
